Tiny was breathing a little easier Friday. If it weren't for Central York firefighters, the small shih tzu wouldn't be breathing at all. The five-year-old dog was pulled out of a smoke-filled bedroom on the second floor of a Bray Circle townhouse, in the Leslie St. and Davis Dr. area of Newmarket by a nieghbour.

Cornils said the donations are part of Project Breathe, and she would like to get oxygen masks to all departments in the Treasure Valley.

Kansas has three formal search and rescue dog K-9 organizations; two of them regularly train at Crisis City. K-9 Search and Rescue of Kansas, Inc. coordinated this donation for Crisis City. Invisible Fence previously donated K-9 mask kits to the Wichita Fire Department and Ford County Fire Department.

“These pet oxygen masks truly are blessings not just for residents, but for firefighters as well,” said Chief Mel Moore of the Wayne Fire Department.

These kits often times are the difference between saving a pets life or not in a fire.

This helps firefighters deliver the right amount of oxygen to the pet and also protects firefighters from an injured animal that may try to bite out of fear

"All our guys have dogs and cats at home," Gaston Fire Chief Roger Mesenbrink said of his firefighters. "I personally have dogs, so trust me, we all know how important this is."

"So many times an animal will wake someone up because they're the first to notice something is wrong," she said. "When a dog alerts their owner of a fire, it saves lives. So if we can do something to save those pets, we will."

Spieler said that countless times throughout his career in the volunteer fire service he has seen pets rescued only for the firefighters not to have the proper equipment outside to further help.

The Fishers Fire Department has new equipment -- pet oxygen masks -- that will help animals who are injured in fires.

“He was trying to gasp for air,” said Adam Justus, assistant chief of the Henderson County Rescue Squad. “Soot was coming out of its mouth and nose.”

Two months ago, Kitty might not have survived. On March 5, however, Henderson County Rescue Squad members used a pet oxygen mask they had recently received through Invisible Fence's Project Breathe program.

East Naples Fire Rescue District received 5 pet oxygen mask kits to be used on front line engines, one for each of their stations.

Saturday marked the second time that firefighters with the Bradenville-based township fire department have used the pet oxygen masks to treat smoke inhalation.

WASHINGTON - A marathon-crashing dog has inspired an online fundraiser that has taken in more than $13,000 in donations toward cancer research.

The pet masks can be used on dogs and cats as well as other small animals. They can also be washed and reused.

Fire officials said Bosco was in the living room where the fire started. Barringer said the dog was lying inside a crate, and he carried both dog and crate outside.

But one small silver lining has been the animals rescued from the building.  Firefighters saved one dog and three cats from the burning structure.
